Nicolai Gedda RIP
One of the greatest male opera singers of our age, Swedish-born Nicolai Gedda, has died at the age of 91.
Tenor Nicolai Gedda thrilled, delighted and entranced audiences throughout the world for over 60 years, having studied music with his great fellow-Swedish master, Jussi Björling. Eminently versatile, Gedda excelled in all opera types. He was compared with Björling in many ways, not least in Bizet's Pearl Fishers, where his duet with Ernest Blanc is regarded as one of the finest renditions of the work,
and Gedda's solo aria from the same opera has become a classic
Gedda was highly honoured, including Swedish Royal Court Singer in 1965 and the Legion d’honneur in 2010. He was also greatly loved in the music world as a friend, mentor and statesman. He leaves a portfolio of more than 200 recordings and in that way will live for ever, but the world of music has lost a giant and the nation of Sweden has lost one of its cultural heroes.
