The incomparable opera diva Montserrat Caballe has died at the age of 85. Although starring in more than 90 leading roles in the great operas, she will be most remembered for her remarkable performance with Freddy Mercury at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, a rare excursion by a serious operatic icon into the world of pop performance (originally in 1987).
She was also the origin of the epithet "it's not over till the fat lady sings", derived from the end of the opera Tosca, in which she played the title role hundreds of times. The opera concludes when the character Tosca sings the final aria before leaping to her suicide from a high building. During one performance in Italy, the set designers had been much too exuberant with the cushion padding behind the ramparts, and on leaping she bounced up again twice into view.
Spoken of in relation to Maria Callas, Caballe made something of a trademark with the O Mio Babbino Caro aria from Puccini's opera Gianni Schicchi, of which she gave many memorable performances. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxZSP1Dc78Q
This aria is the perfect setting for the silken purity of her voice, along with the power. A rare combination of unrivalled qualities.
